Program Note
|
In Summer 2012, I returned to Berlin to study with composer Samuel Adler at the Freie Universität Berlin. I composed Zurückbleiben! over the course of several days, and the piece was premiered in the program’s final concert at the Neue Synagoge in Berlin. Zurückbleiben! opens with a restless, fast-moving line, soon joined by nervous melody. The central section features a contrasting lyrical melody, which gradually tumbles back into the texture and mood of the opening. The title literally means, “Stay back!”
