In 2015, the Musical Chairs Chamber Ensemble of Staten Island, NY, named me in their annual Composer Search and invited me to write a new piece for them. Beyond excited to collaborate with such an incredible group of musicians, I accepted, and I composed With Reluctant Morning Eyes throughout the spring of 2015. The work is not programmatic, but the title does, in a way, describe the music's dramatic trajectory. With Reluctant Morning Eyes opens with a lyrical, somewhat hesitant melody, played by unison flute and guitar. The melody is simple, inspired by the the guitar's natural harmonics, and returns in various guises throughout the piece. Gradually, the instruments become increasingly animated, culminating in a frenzied guitar solo.
