Program Note
|
I composed most of my String Quartet during the Summer of 2012 while studying with Samuel Adler at the Freie Universität Berlin. Before I began writing, I asked my teacher if he had any advice about writing for string quartet. He simply said, “A string quartet is a conversation between four fantastically wonderful people.” Throughout the process of writing the two-movement work, I tried to imagine the music as a conversation. The first movement features a meandering melodic idea decorated by pizzicato remarks. The second movement is fast and aggressive, occasionally interrupted by a whimsical musing or dramatic complaint.
