Program Note

Orbit is Falling is about fierce control and sudden spontaneity. The title is simply a statement. To me, the repetitive, predictable path of one object around a celestial body seems like a picture of stability; yet, orbit is actually a state of free-fall, and relies on the delicate balance of the object’s momentum and the larger body’s gravitational pull. Orbit is Falling contrasts passages of control and stability with unpredictable moments and textures. The balance of these two elements creates a cohesive, effective piece.

Premiere

Premiered by the SUNY Fredonia Concert Band in October 2017.
