Brio is a lively single-movement work for violin, cello, and piano. The piece's structure is defined by three dramatic solos, which give each member of the trio opportunities to re-interpret the preceding music—and re-route the subsequent music—through expressive virtuosity unique to their instruments.
"Brio" is a common tempo marker across the classical music repertoire, found atop the piano trios of Beethoven and Brahms and, perhaps most famously, the first movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, all of which bear the indication "allegro con brio." The word "brio" refers to a sense of vigor and verve—a spirit demanded by the expressive, virtuosic solos that spotlight the individuals playing Brio. The title both highlights the work's structural distinctiveness and honors the influences of the broader classical repertoire. |
